Windows for Passive House

Passive House is a stringent building standard focused on maximizing energy efficiency. The Passive House standard involves several performance requirements that need to be met in order to attain the coveted merit. Insulation, building orientation, passive solar design, ventilation, window eaves, and of course windows all play a pivotal role in achieving the ultimate level of energy efficiency.

The selection of high-performance windows, with an R-value of R-5 or higher will help capitalize on efficiency, in conjunction with the window’s Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). The SHGC is important for capturing the sun’s heat during the day and will retain it once the sun goes down, essentially earning “free heat”. This number may differentiate depending on your climate (the higher the number the more solar heat gain). So, a home in Palm Springs, California would want a lower SHGC then say a home in Anchorage, Alaska. The careful consideration of both R-value and SHGC plays a key role in selecting windows that will allow the building to meet and exceed the Passive House building standard.
