“Universal Design: The design and composition of an environment so that it may be accessed, understood and used without the need for adaptation, modification, assistive devices or specialized solutions, by any persons of any age or size or having any particular physical, sensory, mental health or intellectual ability or disability…” –NDA (National Disabilities Authority)
Truly good design is beautiful as well as inclusive. This can be seen in many aspects of both our window and door series. Universal design is most evident in all of our window and door handle options. Instead of a crank or knob, every handle is a variation of a lever option allowing for ease of function. We have stainless steel or powder-coated handles so beauty will never need to be sacrificed for function.
All of our windows and doors are custom, meaning handle placement is always dictated by the client. We have seen this most helpful in children’s rooms and windows oriented above counters. The lower placement of a handle can greatly increase the ease of operation for a variety of users.
In addition to windows, our doors also have a number of universal design elements and ADA (American with Disabilities Act) accessible thresholds. Our Entry Doors, Lift&Slide Ultra doors and Sliding Ultra doors embody universal design in a number of ways. As briefly mentioned earlier, our entry doors have a number of lever-style handles to select from enabling optimal operability. They are also available in sizes up to 4′ in width or 8′ openings (double-entry french door). The A7 Series entry door has a drop-down threshold option. This allows the door to function without a door threshold. When closed, the door panel drops down onto the finished floor compressing a gasket and creating an air-seal (see cross-section below). The drop-down threshold creates a seamless entry and exit for every individual.
The Lift&Slide Ultra and Sliding Ultra doors have a two distinct configurations available in an ADA threshold. These ADA designs create exemplary solutions for large openings. commonly used as patio doors or living room doors to the exterior.
From styles, handles and configurations our window and door series allow for a wide range of Universal Design options. For further information on Universal options, please email [email protected] or call us at 406.721.2741.
