Portland Energy Efficient Home

The thick foliage and greenery synonymous with the landscape of Portland, Oregon, provides a lush backdrop for this energy-efficient home rebuild. The rural feel of the neighborhood provides peace and quiet while the easy access to Oswego Lake and the Willamette River contributes to the idyllic site for a family home. Just 20 minutes from downtown Portland, the location appeal boasts trailheads, natural reserves, shops and boutiques, eateries, and adjacent to a manicured country club. The home is set back from the road on a mature tree-lined street, creating a charming and private site. The original home on the lot did not meet the needs or layout for the new homeowners, so to best utilize the property a re-build was planned. With an emphasis on efficiency, Birdsmouth Construction was a natural choice and was selected for its reputation as a high-performance builder with up-to-date knowledge of minimizing its impact on the environment.

The streamlined modern design of the home is wrapped in vertical steel with vertical tongue and groove wood accent siding. The low-profile roof lends itself further to the nod to the mod aesthetic. The interior of the home is met with the communal spaces; kitchen, dining, and living room. The back of the house is oriented for the additional rooms, allocated for the office, studio, and the master suite in the rear.  The u-shape house structure hugs a shared deck for convenient outdoor living accessed by multiple rooms. The studio, master, and dining are equipped with multi-panel sliding doors offering incredible amounts of natural light and ease of connection to the exterior. The adjacent sliding doors of the dining room are 14’ wide Lift & Slide doors, greeting the front exterior of the home. The living room has a stunning 17’x13’ curtain wall, creating grand visual proportions for the living space while highlighting the beauty of the lush exterior.

The energy-efficient home utilized the A5 slim frame triple-pane windows and doors for its modern appeal and high performance. The triple-glazing, concealed hinges, low-iron glass, argon-filled glazing, larger thermal break, and multiple air seals create a fenestration package that is environmentally conscious alleviating the constant need for heating/ventilating system to maintain thermal comfort. The combination of tilt-turn windows and Lift and Slide doors provide cross-ventilation and beautiful sightlines throughout the home.
